A quick summary:
As the weather starts to change, (and our non-existent 2021 summer turns to Autumn!) it’s important that you go with the vegetable flow and eat with the seasons. Kelly from The Natural Balance is here to offer her top tips for fuelling your body this season.
When it gets colder our bodies will require more nutrient dense foods to keep us warm, full and nourished. So pay attention to the tubers, squash and pumpkins that start to come into the supermarkets. Not only are they packed with important vitamins for a strong immune system, (which will help with the cold and flu season!) but they provide us with earthy, warming foods and provide us with more energy than your typical summer fruits and vegetables eg: salads.
Nature always knows what’s best for us. Autumn fruits and veggies are specifically designed to improve immunity by being high in vitamin C, immunity-aiding antioxidants and complex carbs to help us heat our bodies. This season we get to look forward to: pumpkins, cranberries, apples, clementines, kale, sweet potato, brussel sprouts, blackberries, carrots, parsnips and sweet potatoes.
Eating seasonally also has the added benefit of being better for the environment (usually less air miles involved with flying out-of season goods across the globe!). It also means we are eating food that is more nutritious as it has been harvested to be eaten straight away. So often fruits and vegetables can be kept chilled for months in huge containers so that we can eat all types of food all year round. So bear that in mind next time you head to your local supermarket, look for what is in season and local if possible.
Lastly, it’s so important that as we are in a northern hemisphere country, we ensure we’re getting enough vitamin D throughout the winter months when pure sunshine is less available. Daily supplement of 400IU per day from October through to April is recommended. Drops are best absorbed - either directly under the tongue, or into water.
